Can I keep my son outside canada for 17 years and still retains his PR card?

I live in the caribbean but my son dad migrated to Canada. He is now a canadian and would like for his son to be also. Can my son keep his PR card and grow in the Caribbean with me, being that he will be outside canada for the next 16 years minimum. He will only be spending summers and some christmas in canada.
